Stage 1 Drought Declared

Stage 1 Drought Declared
Voluntary Water Conservation Recommended

On November 1, 2016, The Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group (DMAG) announced the movement of the Catawba River Basin into a Stage 1 Drought.

The CMD Board of Commissioners voted on November 9, 2016 to implement drought restrictions and move Chester County to Stage 1. Restrictions are not mandatory, and no fines will be given for outdoor water use.

In a Stage 1 Drought, CMD recommends that customers voluntarily reduce lawn and landscape irrigation to no more than two days per week. In addition, limiting watering to the early morning or late evening hours and hand-watering plants and shrubbery instead of using a sprinkler or an automatic irrigation system will also save on water.  Customers are also encouraged to reduce residential vehicle washing and washing down of driveways, sidewalks, and parking lots. Other recommended methods of conserving water include washing full loads of clothes and dishes, and repairing leaky faucets, pipes, or toilets.

The Chester Metropolitan District would like to thank its customers for their cooperation and understanding in helping us meet our water reduction goals. The daily water use demand for CMD in October is within normal ranges.  We have not experienced any supply or demand problems.

The Chester Metropolitan District will continue to review drought conditions regularly and re-evaluate our status as needed throughout the fall and winter.

Pinckney Street Service Outage

During the early hours of the evening last night, CMD discovered a break on the 10″ main located in the Pinckney Street roadway near Celsey Street. Our crews have been on the scene throughout the night working to locate the source of the leak and repair it.

Early this morning, the source was found, and crews are now working to make the repairs and restore service to the affected houses.

Due to its age and unpredictable nature, this section of water main is scheduled for elimination from the system. A new service line will be installed to serve the residences fed by this line, and the old pipe will be cut and capped, removing the potential for breakage and traffic interruption.

We apologize for the inconvenience this maintenance work has caused, and we are working to clear the area as quickly and safely as possible. Please use caution when driving in the area, and consider an alternate route if one is available.

Public Service Announcement: Extortion Scams

CMD Logo

It has come to the attention of Chester Metropolitan District staff that residents of Chester County may be falling victim to a new scam. On the afternoon of May 18, 2016, a resident of the county received a telephone call at his business from an individual claiming to be a tax collector who threatened to condemn his well unless he provided $500 on a disposable credit card (in this case, a OneVanilla card from CVS) to pay taxes on a check which had bounced.

During a series of telephone calls, this person indicated he was with the tax office, the City of Chester, and Chester Metropolitan District. An 888 callback number was given, and the callers listed themselves as “Robert Green” and “Anthony Garcia”. One of the telephone calls he received showed Chester Metropolitan District as the caller [this is called “spoofing”. It can be done online for free and is typically used for prank calls, but has recently become popular for more sinister purposes such as these extortion scams].

CMD would like every resident of Chester County to be aware of the following:

  • CMD does not call individuals asking for payment.
  • We do not maintain, operate, condemn, or disconnect private well systems for any reason.
  • If a payment is due to CMD, it must be made in our office or through our online payment portal. We will never demand payment over the telephone.
  • If you receive a telephone call which appears to come from any government agency and you feel unsure of its legitimacy, do not share any personal information with the caller.
  • If you receive a phone call requesting money or making threats against your personal property or water service, hang up and call our office immediately.

Chester Metropolitan District is committed to serving our customers and protecting the residents and businesses of Chester County. As always, CMD employees will be glad to answer any questions you may have about your water and wastewater service. Feel free to call us at any time Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM at (803) 385-5123 or come by our office at 155 Wylie Street in Chester.
