Water maintenance, filter plant, and
wastewater plants certification are governed by the SC Dept of Labor, Licensing,
and Regulation.
There are four levels of certification.
After being issued a "Trainee" permit an individual can acquire a "D"
certification upon completion of 1 year on the job training and passing of the
examination. The next step would be the "C" then "B" then "A".
This certification is administered by the
"Environmental Certification Board", a division of the SC Dept of Labor,
Licensing, and Regulation. Certification is mandatory to be considered a
"qualified" operator.

Certification for wastewater collection
system operators is voluntary at this time in South Carolina, but is expected to
become mandatory in the near future. It is administered by the Voluntary
Certification Committee.
We have taken steps early to insure that
we have certified operators and will be ahead when the state requires certified
operators to operate the wastewater collection systems of our state.
